A Western Card with the Concertina Fold

Here is another new type of card for my personal challenge...a concertina fold. I had LOTS of fun with this card! I think I might do a few more in the future (when I have plenty of extra time for all the fine details). I used a western/cowboy theme, so it would be eligible for Paper Cutz Challenge. 

 

This is the front of the card. I created it by cutting a 12" x 12" piece of brown card stock in half. Then I folded that piece into 3 even sections. I actually purchased a scoring tool to attach to my Fiskar paper cutter and it worked perfectly. I then traced the first two sections and covered it with green for the pasture. I added a variety of theme related pieces I cut from Old West. The horses and fence are attached with foam dots to add depth.

When you open the card you see the barn and cowgirl. Oh yeah, that rope is just hanging on the post so you can lasso some wild horses. I am not quite pleased with the cowgirl yet, so I will probably do a little editing tomorrow before I start another challenge.

My Personal Challenge Begins

Last night I began working on my first new card design. Not only did I create a card that I haven't before, I also added a new technique...weaving. I have seen my students do this on numerous occasions before, but I have not added this feature to any of my cards. I decided to give it a try. I used scraps that I had and cut them into 5" x 1/2 " strips. I placed a piece of tape at the top of my working area and began alternating the slips of pastel papers. I kept my final piece and used it as a background for the center of my tri-fold card, but I did see that the woven paper can be cut into different shapes....I'll try that one another time.

The dainty pink ribbon is the first impression.

 The second layer is the blue buttons which is the doorway to inside.

Once you open the card, you are overwhelmed with a feeling of happiness.

Walk in My Garden Cricut cartridge was used for flower, small garden critters, and "be happy" expression.

Library Visit

Books, More Books...and a Personal Challenge

My 12 year old daughter and I went to our local library this afternoon and while there, I decided to look to see what type of cardmaking books they had. After searching thru a few different sections I found exactly what I was looking for. I decided to check out all the books that I could (Since I am a teacher I strongly believe you can NEVER have too many books!). Once we got home we sat at the table and went thru them and WOW! we found some amazing cards we are going to make. It reminds me of the movie Julie and Julia when she gets the cookbook and wants to try every recipe in 30 days. I'd like try and make as many new types of cards as I can from these books before I have to return them in three weeks and go back to school (which will mean summer vacation is officially over).

I have set a personal challenge to create a variety of cards that I have not tried before and post them to share. I will be looking forward to hearing your thoughts too. One way of learning is by sharing and reflecting, so please leave comments.

Challenge #18: Cool Yummy Treat w/ Optional Shape Card

Create a yummy treat shape card (optional) or project *As always, there does need to be a Cricut cut somewhere on your project, it does not have to be the item listed in the theme, though the theme does need to be incorperated as well.

I created the #1 Teacher shape card first then realized I needed a cool yummy treat, so I added the second card. I used the same shape (round card from the Wild Card cartridge p. 48) but added the small ice cream cone (p. 107) from Doodlecharm. The paper is from Nana's Nursery ~ Baby Girl by DCWV. The sentiment was cut from Wild Card (p. 57).

Whooo...Ollie the Owl

Bitten by the Bug 2 Challenge

This week's challenge is...using the adorable owl from the Storybook cartridge. Unfortunatley that is a cartridge I do not own. I recently won the Hoot 'n Holler cartridge on My Pink Stamper, but I have seen lots of projects using this cartridge so I wanted to try something a little different. I decided to use the Animal Kingdom cartridge. I like the owl (on p.99) but not the extra feature for layering its feathers; therefore, I added the brown color myself.

I did emboss the blue cardstock using the circle Cuttlebug folder and then used the corner punch to hold that sheet of paper. I added self adhesive ribbon and a branch for the owl to perch on.

Paper Playtime

I created my card by using a deep purple card stock as the base. I then used neon green card stock and positioned it freely at an angle to add a pop of color. The fish bowl was cut from Animal Kingdom using gray card stock and a lighter purple shadow beneath. I cut two layers of water (p.120) from patterned paper using the same cartridge. The sea horse was cut from Doodlecharms (p. 100) using purple-dye paper. Bubble stickers were added and the sentiment was typed with Microsoft Word then printed on a larger bubble sticker..."Sea" You Soon.

Torn Edges Card for Child

Recently I purchased two craft books: Budget Scrapbooking by Memory Makers and Creating Cards with Scrapbook Embellishments by MaryJo McGraw. As I was looking at some of the projects, I had an idea that incorporated both books. I would make a Good Luck/Great Job card for a child with torn edges using scrap paper. Well, I came up with this idea because I have been in math training for the past two days. Then my daughter cleaned out her closet finding some old math workbooks from many years ago and that became the scrap paper. I thought any child would love to receive a card in their lunchbox or backpack as a surprise. These cards have a math theme and I would give it to a child who earned a great score on a math test or to tell them Good Luck before taking a test. You could definitely change the background to any subject or theme easily!
